Our show today celebrates small jazz group recordings for the independent jazz labels over a three year period, 1943-46. Chief among these labels was Commodore, from which most of our recordings are drawn. Another label, Keynote, also provided a home for the very talented jazz artists during this period, as did Blue Note. Common to all these studio sessions was the immense talent and energy of these brilliant jazz artists and their interpretations of the great jazz standards. Tow great clarinetists, Albert Nicholas and Sidney Bechet team up on their 1946 recording of "Weary Way Blues". Among our trumpeters today, listen for stalwarts like Max Kaminsky, Wild bill Davison and Charlie Shavers and we include some fine piano work from Johnny Guarnieri, Art Hodes and Teddy Wilson. And of course the brilliant drumming around in these sessions from artists like George Wettling, Jo Jones and Cozy Cole!!
